Sergiev Posad is a half-day trip from Moscow and one of most interesting towns in the Moscow Region.
The town is known as the capital of the Russian Orthodox Church, because for many centuries it has been the main cultural and religious centre of Russia.
The town is home to the famous medieval Holy Trinity Monastery of St. Sergius, founded in the 1340s by Reverend Sergius of Radonezh, whose name was given to the town because he played a great role in a consolidation of Russian lands.
